It was the woman who made my prom dress who asked

It was the woman who made my prom dress who asked one of the most insightful questions after the Barnes & Noble book tour kickoff event near my home last month.

She opened the book while Cynt and I were discussing it. She moved right past the note from Viola and asked:

"How in the world do you know Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.?!?! I *love* him and his show!"

Most people don’t expect to see his elegantly-penned words, let alone a reference to a hip hop tune or rappers in a leadership book.

But if you understand history and culture, you understand the very foundations of leadership.

In this conversation, I was asked why I titled the book Call and Response.

The answer takes us somewhere most leadership frameworks never go… from a totally different continent, to the pulpit and even the DJ booth, from the work songs of enslaved people who weathered the Middle Passage, to the first commercial rap records.

What fascinated me most while writing the book is what the science says about this rhythm all of us instinctively respond to.

Neuroscience calls neural coupling. Positive psychology... a happiness trigger.

Which makes you wonder: what if one of the oldest cultural traditions we have has also been teaching us something profound about how we humans are wired to lead and connect?

Call and Response captures all that. I promise you, if you get stuck on the word church, you're missing the entire point.

Even the questions you are grappling with today may just be the seed of something great if only you’ll plant and nurture them.

This is the story of Call and Response… and the people who told me to soar anyway when the headwinds got really strong and seemingly unbearable.

This is one of the reasons why I sign my books “always soar anyway,” because that’s how dreams become reality and missions become accomplished—even if the end goal isn’t completely clear.

You also don’t know how one woman will take the power you share with them and multiply it.

So don’t just celebrate a woman… share power with her.

At my Call and Response book tour kickoff event at Barnes & Noble Hillside Village, Cynt Marshall asked me about the creativity and innovation chapter in Call & Response.

I told the audience something I believe deeply: in the Black church tradition, creativity and innovation wasn't always about luxury. It was a survival tactic.

Many of us watched our grandparents make something out of nothing--you know, "making a way out of no way." My grandmother certainly did. That instinct—figuring it out, adapting, making a way—is innovation at its core.

What amazes me is that generations before us managed to do this under far more pressure than most of us face today.

Innovation doesn’t always start with resources. Sometimes it starts with courage and a little enginuity.

By the way, Cynt was being coy...at first. She is in this chapter, and for a very good reason.
