This is Marlene.

She works at the Barnes & Noble in Arlington, TX. She searched high and low for this copy of Call & Response and she didn’t know that I was the author…just a bookish customer hunting down a good read.

The store had just gotten it in a shipment; they were down to one before it even made it to the shelf.

So when she came back, from searching for it on the cart where they place books to be shelved, I said casually,

“Do you have a sharpie, I’ll sign it.”

She and the manager, Zach looked at me and both said,

“This your book?”

“You’re the author?!”

Mind you, this was 15 minutes after I made the initial request as an unsuspecting customer.

I said, “Yes,and I’ll sign it for you. I promise you it will move even faster.”

Zach said, “Let me get a [autographed edition] sticker and put it on there so people will know.

Marlene quickly said “No, that’s my book! I’m buying that!!”

Me: “So, should I personalized it for you when I sign?”

Yes! Marlene said.

The bookseller snatched it up, ya’ll. I couldn’t make this up if I tried

So Zach, who saw that more stock was on order on the computer, promptly said he’d add to the order because they were now fresh out!!

This made my day!

So you might wait a week before looking for the book at The Parks in Arlington. I’ll swing back through when they have more on hand and sign them.

I did this at the Half Price Books in Arlington today too, but they were out of stock and located one for me on Preston Rd. I thanked them and went on my way.

They never were the wiser.

Fun afternoon treating my father to lunch and then strolling into Barnes & Noble to sign about a dozen editions of Call & Response. They were down to about three signed copies. If you are looking for a signed copy, I took care of a whole new batch in Cedar Hill. Chop chop, though. The team there says they move pretty quickly.

Daddy talked to everyone who crossed our paths to tell them I was his daughter and that he was very proud.

So I'll just tell you what that thing was:

“So this is what church was like in the 1600s with the Dutch,” I thought to myself.

But the beating of the African drums and the call of “Ago!” (pronounce ah-go) snapped me right out of it, and took me back to a time in college when the DANCEAfrica troop led by the late Baba Chuck Davis took over Ed Landreth Hall at Texas Christian University. When the griot, our host for the service, yelled it out, I was a little amazed that I knew how to respond.

I responded, “Ame!” (pronouced ah-meh)

But isn’t that exactly what my book, Call and Response points to? The shared experience, pronounced by adversity, generation over generation, that happiness trigger, the foundational leadership model, the neural coupling that always points the way from the internal compass etched on the souls of Black folk."
