What does it look like to find your voice in the current business context?

I have the opportunity to share the answer with my sisters of the Phi Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpharetta, Ga. this evening.

For me, the question is bigger than communication. Many women are struggling because the workplace is asking them to lead under stress, uncertainty, overload, and a growing focus tax that can make even the most capable among us feel scattered. It isn't because they are struggling to find their voice because they lack insight, talent, or truth.

So tonight, I’ll be talking about voice as a leadership practice.

How do we approach this question as a heart-centered leader?

It's a question that matters now more than ever.

NYC PHOTO DUMP: one of the things I absolutely loved about my Call and Response event in NYC was that the crowd that showed up was the freaking paparazzi! They came prepared and snapped photos and videos like they were the content team, and they WERE. Much of this photo dump is courtesy people I didn’t even ask to shoot, and they shot… and they didn’t miss! Carla had her content team in tow too, so I can’t wait to see what they captured. TCU CONVOCATION was a blast!

Different format this year: each college was large enough to fill up their own arena with individual ceremonies. So, today my fellow board members and I were invited to join TCU Bob Schieffer College of Communication Dean and department heads on the platform as the graduates received their degrees.

Two-hundred fifteen graduates including 12 masters degrees candidates in strategic comms, journalism and speech communication walked across stage and joined the ranks of alumni.

Hard to believe this was me 31 years ago today!

It was a joy to share in their celebration! TCU Lead On!

It was a jammed-packed 20-something hours or so in

It was a jammed-packed 20-something hours or so in NYC, but it was well worth it! Many of you have seen Day 1 in photos.

It’s time you see what happened on Day 2 before I headed to the airport.

It was amazing to have a successful event in the No. 1 media market, but reconnecting with my editor Abby West *in person* for the first time in over a decade, was a rival treat.

She and her amazing team, at Amistad Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishing assembled for this ceremonious photo to celebrate Call and Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church, a work that is already impacting so many leaders.

She and I met over a decade ago, both doing totally different things in our careers, and somewhere between a coffee in Brooklyn and today with an entire pandemic in between, we made something happen that will no doubt become a classic.

The most surreal moment was signing her edition. We both got a little misty when that happened.

And to memorialize it on that iconic HarperCollins staircase was indeed the icing on the cake! The last photo I’ve seen with her team like this was with Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 Cent.

Thank you, Abby for believing in, supporting and advocating for Call and Response.

It will continue to touch so many lives with a message of heart-centered leadership for decades to come!

Another special shoutout to associate editor Makayla Tabron who was also with me every step of the way, Ashley Yepsen on publicity, and the “fantabulous” Alyssa Joy Miller on marketing! (the latter two not pictured)

P.S. The last time I was in these storied halls at HarperCollins, I was pitching my first book, and ultimately received a decline. That was seven years ago. Not only did that first proposal morph into the award-winning No Thanks, 7 Ways to Say I’ll Just Include Myself, which is still selling strong with a steady stream of perfect 5 star reviews on Amazon, it set me on my culture + applied-science path to three more books that would ultimately lead to Call and Response, same imprint and publisher. The message here is KEEP GOING! I was supposed to be in the room all along. It was just a matter of time.

Now, it's time to read it from the authoritative source that lasts more than the 1:30 video on TikTok, the book with the science that actually proves it, Call and Response: 10 Leadership Lessons from the Black Church.

Then shout. It's good for you.

Can I get an amen??

And guess who is one of the No. 1 consumers of this business leadership book: your mom--that's if she can pry it from your dad's vice grip.

So the moral of the story is to get at least three...that is if you ever want to read it yourself.

I signed plenty of these for Mother's Day gifts at my last signing in NYC, so imagine how families are going about this down here in the South!

Order them again and again...but in threes or fours, but please go support an independent or Black book store near you.

Don't give Amazon all your money (although these are on sale right now and the Audible version is dope).

P.S. Your new grad will enjoy it too--especially since you can't get them to church anyway. They'll need these leadership lessons from this non-religious text for their new job or as they go off to college. Just don't fool yourself. One copy just isn't enough. But treat mom first. It'll make you look good. 💐
