If there is a secret sauce for the minuscule number of the Fortune 500 E- and C-Suite leaders who are Black, or even the billionaire business leaders like them, many will tell you they learned their most important leadership lessons, not simply from the Ivy Leagues, but from the Black Church.

So what now when a generation or two have decided that church is no longer for them, or they leave due to church trauma, or they say they prefer churches that do not center social justice? What happens when churches modernize and minimize the Black experiences that foster these leadership skills?

It’s simple math, and we need to talk about it. I am leading this conversation along with top names in business and corporate America, consulting with historians and Black church leaders.

As one gigantic reminder of our country’s oft candy-coated, traumatic past goes up in smoke, a reminder that stories of my ancestors matter and deserve space for their truth. Let me tell you a bit about the enslaved descendants of another one of the South’s largest cotton plantations—one that existed on the very soil where I grew up and worshipped every Sunday.
It's a sidebar to my ongoing Call & Response behind-the-scenes conversations on Substack and a follow-up to the article "What Would Make Me Cry While Writing the Final Pages of My Next Book?"
We learned about the old Millermore Plantation, the soil where I not only grew up, but where my home church was built and stands today ...but I couldn't address the open wounds that discovery left on my heart until I tracked down the ancestors from that plantation.
And I did.
