I had a breakthrough about how I was treated in the workplace once in my career while writing my latest book, Yes Please! 7 Ways to Say I’m Entitled to the C-Suite.

I had been asked by HR if I believed what was happening to me was racist or sexist, and I told them that I couldn’t be sure because these were people I simply didn’t know that well. It felt like it, but I couldn’t be sure.

But what I did know was that this new leadership was all about clock punching, box checking and process following. My approach was one toward innovation and strategy, failing fast and forward.

A conversation with a new friend Karrie Sullivan, an institutional psychologist, usher in my breakthrough. What we had was a classic case of fixed mindsets in charge of growth mindsets, which is an absolute no-no she says when it comes to organizational cultural success.

It was definitely a “bro” culture. That’s how it felt.

And yes, that can look like gender, bias, or racial bias because there is a correlation between those with growth mindsets and marginalized groups. Watch the video, and be sure to pick up my book to read more about this fascinating research.

It’s incredible that they can predict the downfall of an organization based on how many fixed mindset and growth mindset are at the top of organizations.

One more thing: be sure you learn something from the adversity in order to access that growth mindset. 😉

When I released my book, No Thanks, 7 Ways to Say I’ll Just Include Myself back in August 2020, I purposefully did not include any discussion or discourse on the topic of imposter syndrome because I questioned then if it applied to women and especially those of color who go into spaces and are othered.

Because if you are reared to believe that the Old Black Tax is real, you know that you are not only overprepared and over credentialed and overly capable, you know you’re worth before you enter the door.

So perhaps it’s what happens once you get into the room, and that may be more than self doubt.

About two years later, two expert wrote an article in the Harvard Business Review that echoed my sentiment. Now everyone believes it just might be true.

Be aware of how you assign imposter syndrome to yourself, my Sister. It’s been very trendy lately, but it may not fit your situation.
